Supporting Sensing Enterprise Operations with Polymorphic Service Infrastructures

Sensing enterprises span both physical and virtual boundaries and require support for dynamic re-configurability and decentralised collaboration among large numbers of data retrieval and information processing nodes. Current information technology infrastructures lack sufficient support for decentralised service formation requiring either concentration of all relevant information to a central decision making point or considering static distributed processing node configurations. In this paper we propose a serviceoriented infrastructure for supporting sensing enterprise operations which is based on polymorphic services. Such services are capable of adapting and evolving dynamically according to fluctuations of the environmental context. The applicability of the proposed approach is discussed in an exemplar case study scenario concerning a Medium Density Fiberboard production process.
